Address:Muuseumi tee 2, Tartu
Architects:2016, Tsuyoshi Tane, Lina Ghotmeh and Dan Dorell
The new main building of the Estonian National Museum in the Raadi district is one of Estonia’s most outstanding contemporary architectural achievements and has earned widespread international acclaim. Opened in 2016, the building was designed by architects Tsuyoshi Tane, Lina Ghotmeh, and Dan Dorell based on their winning international competition entry, “Memory Field”. The architectural concept originates from the runway of a former military airfield; as an extension of this runway, the building appears to lift off directly from the surrounding landscape. The long, low structure made of glass and concrete symbolizes Estonia’s complex history, bridging the past and the future. Spacious exhibition halls, the strategic use of natural light, and the way the building blends into its environment create an open, modern cultural hub for visitors. The structure is widely regarded as a defining icon of contemporary Estonian architecture.
