The new main building of Tartu Applied Health Sciences University is one of the most outstanding modern educational facilities in Estonia, bringing together functionality, environmental consciousness, and thoughtful architectural design. Cleverly positioned between student dormitories built in the 1980s, the stepped structure was designed to ensure ample sunlight for all spaces within the complex while creating a dynamic interior layout.
Located on Nooruse Street, the building was completed in 2011 to a design by architects Indrek Peil and Siiri Vallner (Kavakava Architects). Nestled between two existing residential blocks, the structure was planned with a strong emphasis on integrating seamlessly into the surrounding urban landscape and the broader Maarjamõisa healthcare campus.
Inside, the focus is on openness and effortless movement. The heart of the building is formed by the library, information center, and café, which serve as a central gathering place for students and faculty alike. A striking bright-red staircase running through the building – often referred to as the “veins of the house” – connects all floors and offers views into various active spaces, encouraging interaction and a sense of community. The interior design by Tarmo Piirmets earned the Estonian Association of Interior Architects’ Annual Award, recognising the building’s exceptional functionality and aesthetic quality.
Sustainability is another key element of the project. Built using local bricks and renewable wood materials, the design enables natural ventilation and an energy-efficient indoor climate. The main building of Tartu Applied Health Sciences University stands as a prime example of how modern architecture can harmoniously blend aesthetics, practicality, and environmental responsibility.
