The ruins of the preserved two-towered structure of Tartu Cathedral are one of the most remarkable examples of medieval brick Gothic architecture in Old Livonia. The construction of the church began in the 13th century and continued until the early 16th century. The three bays of the basilica nave were covered with ribbed vaults, supported by octagonal pillar-buttresses. The massive west facade with two towers, the upper part of which has been demolished, may have served a defensive function in the past. At present, the ruins of the church nave and towers are conserved and roofed.
