Tartu Environmental Education Centre and its predecessors have been operating on Lille Street for over 70 years. Since 2013, the centre has been operating in a building designed by the architecture firm Karisma, which, like a tree stump, is nestled among the hills. The educational centre and the surrounding landscape are intertwined and inseparable; one cannot be experienced without the other. The building, where outdoor and indoor activities are closely linked, strives to remain true to its purpose. This means being as environmentally conscious as possible and thus an ideal place for learning about sustainability, biological diversity, and environmental protection. Great attention has been paid to the choice of building materials – based on their ecological footprint in production and transportation. The positioning of the building and the design of its internal systems even take into account the movement of the sun. The pitched roof and wooden exterior cladding add a rustic touch.
